"Journal & Chill" Workshop - How One Afternoon Showed Us the Real Benefits of Journaling for Kids

Yesterday was a milestone day for InClouds. It marked our very first Journal & Chill  workshop for kids - the first of many, I believe! The idea grew from a simple mission: to show children how journaling for kids can be a superpower, and how much it can do for their emotional well-being and development. Here is what we shared with them:

  • A journal for kids is like a personal time machine. By flipping through the pages, children can see how much they've grown and changed. One sentence is often enough to pull them right back into a memory or a feeling they might have otherwise forgotten.
  • Paper and pen can hold much more than our voices sometimes can. There are things that are hard to say out loud, but the paper doesn't judge. When kids write down what worries or saddens them, it's as if a weight is lifted off their shoulders; they immediately feel lighter. This is one of the most powerful benefits of journaling for kids: it creates a safe, pressure-free space for self-expression.
  • Journal writing is a workout for the brain. It helps children understand why they feel the way they do — like talking to a best friend who never interrupts, giving them all the space they need to be heard. It's a beautiful gateway to building emotional intelligence in children.

InClouds. Journal is a slightly different kind of guided journal for kids. It's designed to help children open up through simple journal prompts for kids, mindfulness exercises for emotional development, and coloring - because for some children, expression comes easier through art than words. During the workshop, I shared the story of how the journal was born and told them a few personal stories to inspire them to never stop believing in themselves, even when they feel misunderstood. Our kids journal is there to remind them to protect their confidence and take care of their inner selves.

Creative Freedom

For the creative session, we made Gratitude Jars, a hands-on activity that perfectly complements the gratitude journal for kids mindset we aim to nurture. We didn't use Pinterest examples or look at phones for "inspiration." We simply gave them the materials: stickers, glitter, paper, and colors, and let them create. They handled the task perfectly and intuitively. Every single jar was unique, even though they were sitting right next to each other. It was a beautiful symbol of how being different is what makes life so wonderful, and a vivid reminder of why creative activities for kids matter so deeply.

Before we wrapped up, we created a "Wall of Happy Thoughts" where kids can leave a positive note or pick one up whenever they need a little boost of joy, or want to show empathy for someone else who might be having a tough day. It's the kind of growth mindset practice that we hope every child carries with them long after they leave the room.

Chilling, Creating, and Giving Back

In just two hours, we did so much. We created, practiced journaling, chilled to soft jazz, and ate cinnamon rolls and brownies - all without a single phone in sight. It proved to me once again: screen-free activities for kids don't need to compete with technology; they just need to be given space. If you give children the opportunity to play and create, they will choose it over a screen every single time. Our youngest participant was 4.5 and our oldest was 15, but age didn't matter - everyone had a blast.

Starting a journaling habit early is one of the simplest and most impactful things we can do for a child's emotional well-being. I hope every child left with a spark of inspiration to begin their own journaling journey. They definitely went home with their Gratitude Jars, a new school timetable, and a special discount on their next InClouds. Journal.

For an alt tag that is both descriptive and fits the warm, creative vibe of your post, you can use:

The best part? All funds from the workshop tickets were donated to Krijesnica, an organization supporting children and parents affected by malignant diseases. We wanted to show, in practice, that helping others is the ultimate way to fill your own heart with gratitude.

A huge thanks to Sanela from Ostvarenje for the encouragement, the beautiful space, and for bringing these wonderful kids to the first InClouds. workshop. You always remember your "firsts." Forever grateful.
